Ed Balls, the UK’s Children's and Schools Secretary used the word Armageddon to describe the economic situation.
President Obama said on Monday: “I took a trip to Elkhart, Indiana, today. Elkhart is a place that has lost jobs faster than anywhere else in America. In one year, the unemployment rate went from 4.7 percent to 15.3 percent. Companies that have sustained this community for years are shedding jobs at an alarming speed, and the people who've lost them have no idea what to do or who to turn to. …could turn a crisis into a catastrophe”
Therefore, what does this all conjure up in one who has never in 65 years experienced Armageddon or catastrophe? Just a couple of things:
1. Although I was not aware at the time, I did live through the last half of WWII and although it was not Armageddon, it could certainly be classified a catastrophe for millions of people. Since 1945 we have had some difficult times, some steps backward, some crises, but never a catastrophe. We all know about the Cuban Missile Crisis,
the JFK killing, and the recessions of 58, 73, and 81 (did I miss one?), the Twin Towers, but we have never seen anything like France in 1789, Russia in 1917-1991, or the Nazi death camps. So, I reject these references to our present condition.
2. Having lived 20 miles from Elkhart Indiana for 5 years in the 70’s I know something about the conditions and the people of that area. One of the main industries in Elkhart is the manufacture of motor-homes which I’m sure is depressed at this time. The area is populated, and heavily influenced, by Amish and Mennonite people with strong family and community connections. Saying that these people “have no idea what to do or who to turn to” is insulting to the residents of Elkhart. If the economy is down many of the statistically unemployed are relying these connections to get them past hard times. Referring to a 15.3 rate is just a polemic designed to pass a socialist agenda.
3. The Democrats have been talking down the economy for 2 years now. Where are the fireside chats that say, “We have nothing to fear but fear it’s self.”? All the bad mouthing got them the Oval Office, but the specter of Orwell’s Oceania will take the concerted effort of politicians from both sides of the Atlantic.
